Hey Farmhands!
It’s Tate Brombal here taking over the Farm to announce my new, upcoming creator-owned comic Behold, Behemoth!
You might recognize me as the writer of Barbalien: Red Planet, the Colonel Weird & Little Andromeda comics here on Substack, and the Black Hammer Encyclopedia. And while I spend A LOT of time in the Hammerverse, I’ve also recently written House of Slaughter — the first spin-off of James Tynion IV & Werther Dell’Edera’s Something is Killing the Children — as well as The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos over on the Tiny Onion Substack (Shh, don’t tell Jeff I’m cheating). So, you can probably see that I’m pretty well-versed at writing within other people’s universes…
Well, I’m excited to announce my very first Creator-Owned comic coming from BOOM! Studios in November 2022! It’s called BEHOLD, BEHEMOTH, and I’m co-creating it with the incredible Nick Robles. You’ve probably seen a bunch of his legendary covers for Marvel and DC, and he’s also illustrated such books as Euthanauts with writer Tini Howard and The Sandman Universe’s The Dreaming: Waking Hours with G. Willow Wilson. To say he’s one of the best working artists in monthly comics is an understatement, so I really can’t believe we’re teaming up!
Nick and I first met when he did a variant cover for Barbalien: Red Planet. Then, our first comic together was last week’s Colonel Weird & Little Andromeda comic “Randall’s Story” — so Nick also has a Hammerverse connection! And if you dug what we did with Colonel Weird, you will definitely enjoy what we’re cooking up in Behold, Behemoth.
Here’s a glimpse at the official press release from Boom! Studios, including some first-look preview pages from the comic:
Greyson’s world is crumbling following his brother’s sudden and mysterious death. His
sleepless nights are haunted by vivid nightmares of a terrifying monster, pushing him to
the brink of losing both his sanity and his job as a social worker. But he’s truly shaken to
the core when his newest case—a young orphaned girl named Wren—is found at the
scene of a brutal murder, just hours after first meeting Greyson. The line between
nightmare and waking life blur as Greyson soon discovers that the monster from his
dreams might just be real—a mythical, ancient beast that is bringing about the end of the
world, with shocking connections to both him and Wren…
This comic is about the end of the world, biblical mythologies, and towering monsters, but it’s also about grief, reckoning with uncertain futures, and the complicated bond between a man and an orphaned girl. Think of it as The Last of Us meets Shadow of the Colossus, if that helps. It’s an intimate epic that Nick and I are pouring our hearts and souls into, so we really hope you’ll come along for the ride! And if you are interested, PLEASE make sure to pre-order and let your comic shop know that you want Behold, Behemoth so that you can join us from the very first issue! Creators talk about it all the time, but new comics live or die by those preorders, so your support and showing up would be greatly appreciated!!
Anyways, that's enough out of me! Thanks, Jeff, for letting me take over the farm, and thanks to all of YOU for taking the time to check my new comic out. I'll keep an eye on the comments if you have any questions, and make sure to look out for more updates in the coming months! But for now, BEHOLD... Jeff's variant cover for Behold, Behemoth #1 (featuring beautiful colors by Patricio Delpeche)! Stunning, right?! -Tate
This looks spectacular!!
Amazing preview art. I really enjoy The Dreaming: Waking Hours. I'll check this out!
