When they filmed the Fire Walk With Me movie close to where I lived I went up and watched them film a scene that ended up being cut. Many years later when they returned to film the third season, I was very fortunate to be at the Palmer house to watch them film the finale episode final scene. At the time the fans there had no idea what we were witnessing. David allowed us fans amazing access, we were literally right in front of the action. Most directors would have closed down several blocks and every street but David didn't do that. It was a night shoot, 12 hours long, mostly neighbors, over 100 watching them film the first half of the shoot. When I arrived shortly before midnight, most had left, they had six more hours of filming, so it was about 15 of us left. Watching David direct and hearing him softly speaking over the megaphone, a tradition for him, was incredible, despite it being almost 10 years ago, it seems like yesterday. When they wrapped, David had his driver slowly pass us as he waved and smiled, seemingly making eye contact with each and every one of us. Eventually I will share my video clips but being one of the lucky ones to watch him direct was like Charlie opening up the candy bar to find the golden ticket. David will be missed beyond words.
Jon, have you seen the 9-hour long Behind the Curtain documentary? It's 18 parts of behind the scenes material of Lynch directing Twin Peaks: The Return. The last episode is almost only stuff from the Palmer house shoot.
The doc was only released on the limited Twin Peaks: From Z to A box set, long sold out. But there's a re-release out next month. Worth the 50 bucks for the exlusive extras alone.
IMO the Behind the Curtain is the best behind the scenes material of Lynch ever released. Really makes you understand why the same actors wanted to work with him again and again. Absolute wonder to see how intimate his directing style is.
Yeah I didn't pick up the original Z to A set, so I am glad to see it coming out at an affordable price point as the first pressing went out of print and rather expensive on the secondary market. I pre-ordered the new set when it was announced, and will look forward to those exclusive making of parts, especially the one regarding the finale. Its hard to believe its been nearly 10 years since that night, it was October 9-10, 2015 when they filmed that. The episode didn't air until August 2017. I did find that someone managed to get a hold of the stuff I shot when they were doing the Fire Walk With Me movie. I gave the footage to a guy back in the 90's shortly after who was a TP collector and he was apparently selling video tapes containing stuff and my video was on it so this fan site must have picked it up and uploaded. This was so long ago so I am glad its up on the internet for fans to see. This literally seems like yesterday for me, you can view it at the link below if you want. Time has gone by too fast. The muscle car in the foreground belonged to Keifer Sutherland. Eventually I will get my footage from The Return finale up on eBay. Footage shot by fans is rather hard to come by it seems.
Although I'm a fan of Lynch myself, when I heard the news of his passing, you were the first person I thought of Jeff. As someone who has been following you for so long, I know how important Lynch is in your life and in your work. The world has truly lost a unique and inspiring individual.
I just wanted to say that I recently finished reading Gideon Falls and I started watching Twin Peaks (I finished season 1 in 2 days). It's amazing to see how much it inspired your work and so many others. My friend is a big fan of Alan Wake and I suggested some of your work because I knew it was inspired by similar things. Now I'm also suggesting Twin Peaks.
Thank you for sharing this piece with us.
I feel your pain, my friend. I'm grateful we still have his art to bring us together.

Amazing story. SO jealous.

I agree. It is almost shocking how much he let us see. But it is incredible.
💔

Beautifully said. I’m grateful for all he shared with the world during an incredible career.
