At long last, the conclusion to what we started in Black Hammer Reborn is here. Coming August 30th to comic shops, BLACK HAMMER: THE END #1 (of 6) will reveal the fate of Lucy Weber and bring together almost every character that’s appeared in any Black Hammer Universe book! It’s a sprawling, cosmic “event” comic filtered through the Black Hammer lens, and it starts here!
Malachi Ward, who co-illlustrated Black Hammer Reborn with the amazing Caitlyn Yarsky, will be handling art duties on this series and he’s doing some fantastic work. I first encountered Malachi’s work years ago with some of his mini-comics and self-published books with Matt Sheehan including ANCESTOR and FROM NOW ON
Malachi brings a really inventive style that I haven’t really seen in super hero comics before and I’ve scripted some really challenging scenes that he is handling wonderfully with his unique perspective and approach. I’m very excited that this long-gestating series is finally here.
While the title is “THE END” I really consider it the end of this cycle of Black Hammer books. It will sort of clean the slate for a really fresh start next year where I want to strip the universe back down to just one book that will take a totally new approach and feature many new characters.
*Note: Dean Ormston is still drawing a Madam Dragonfly mini-series as well. Hopefully that will be ready for 2024 too. It focuses on the supernatural side of the BHU.

FISHFLIES #2 is now available for order at your local comic shop. Issue #1 did really well, and I wanted to thank you all for the support. The cut-off day for orders for #2 is August 14, so make sure to ask you local comic book shop to order you one. Just a reminder, I will not be collecting Fishlies into tradepaperback. These extra-length issues essentially are the trades, so don’t miss out!
I am also excited to announce that I have added an extra issue to the Fishflies story! I had some new idea as I worked on issue 5 and decided to follow them. So the series will now be seven issues long instead of six!
In addition to Kelley Jones and Peach Momoko, I have enlisted the brilliant Duncan Fegredo for a Fishflies variant! I’ll be revealing that soon.
And finally, my graphic novel with Matt Kindt and David Rubin, COSMIC DETECTIVE will be available in softcover format from Image in September. If you missed out on the Kickstarter for the hardcover version, this is you chance to grab a copy!
See you in a week or so for a deep dive into the creation of PHANTOM ROAD!
-Jeff
I’ve been so happy to see Malachi Ward’s art in Black Hammer books. I’m a fan of several of his self published comics and was pleasantly surprised when he showed up in the Black Hammer universe
Is the extra issue of Fishflies going to delay Royal City until 2025?
